Background of N95 respirator masks: N95 respirators were initially developed for industrial application. These highly specialized masks clean out as much as 95% of contamination. The respirators approved by FDA and NIOSH are used in healthcare facilities to significantly reduce the impact of hazardous exposure on the healthcare workers. It is important to note here that N95 masks used for medical purpose are classified as single-use products. Usage of N95 masks: The structure of N95 respirator masks is composed of nonwoven material presented in the form of layers which traps the hazardous particles into the dense network of the fibers. These fibers usually made of polypropylene are extremely thin, as much as a single micron making it impossible for the particles to pass through. Furthermore, the electrostatically charged material of the mask keeps the particles intact. However, as the particles build up into the mask it makes it difficult to breathe. That is why they are supposed to be thrown away carefully after single use. There are two outward protective layers on the mask. These layers that protect the inside and outside of the mask are made using spunbounding. Between these layers is the pre-filtration layer. The needled nonwoven structure of this layer adds to the cohesiveness of the mask. The last layer further augments the filtration efficiency through its highly efficient meltblown polarized nonwoven material. Utmost care and precaution must be taken while handling respirators for an effective performance. Firstly wear the mask very carefully in a clean environment. You must wear it all the time while you are in a contaminated area. Taking off the mask even for about 10% of the time while you are in the contaminated area will kill the purpose of the respirator mask. Testing of N95 masks: -These highly intricate and technologically advanced masks go through rigorous testing measures to ensure their effectiveness. Before going through the tests the masks are kept in a restricted environment having a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius and 85% humidity level. The idea is to check the respirator’s filtration ability that must be above the certification level during all the situations. Some of these tests include: -
Summary: -To sum up, N95 respirators are used to protect the wearer from the hazards present in the work environment. They keep away things like mucus; infected droplets, spit and blood splatter from the wearer’s mouth and nose.
